Juvenile goldfish of a type suitable for goldfish ponds.Ĭopyright Goldfish are voracious eaters and can therefore produce large amounts of waste, both in the form of feces as well as secretions through their gills. The low price of quality Goldfish and its abundant availability also makes them a household favorite. An air stone or small water pump that helps to circulate the water properly, especially in hot weather, is probably the only piece of equipment that a Goldfish pond needs. If the number of Goldfish that you keep in your Goldfish pond is relatively small, you will not need the elaborate and intricate filtration system that some other varieties like the Koi fish need. This makes them welcome additions to the outdoor garden pond. They may nibble a little at some vegetation, but generally leave plants alone. Although its maximum length is 23 inches, it rarely grows beyond half this size. The average Goldfish does not grow too big, for one. Goldfish ponds are easier to maintain than many other kinds of fishponds. They may be calico-colored, orange or even blue. They are similar to the comets but have a shorter tail. The Shubunkins are most admired by the British. This variety is more popular in the Asian regions. They have a very attractive butterfly like double tail. Ryukins are round-bodied fish that are reddish orange or red and white. A long training tail like that of a comet is what fetches the fish its name. This variety has a narrow body, an orange or white body with a red head. The Comets have the distinction of being the only breed to originate in the USA. The Comets, Ryukins and the Shubunkins are probably the best Goldfish for the Goldfish pond. Although all Goldfish varieties can be kept in the Goldfish pond, some varieties are hardier than the others. There are different varieties of gold fish that can be kept in the Goldfish pond. Goldfish are actually low maintenance, colorful and a rewarding addition to any pond. A thin layer of ice will also not affect the Goldfish in such a case. In ponds, Goldfish will even survive lower temperatures so long as there is enough oxygen in the water. Goldfish is hardy fish generally, but do not survive long at higher temperatures. The ideal temperature range for the Goldfish pond would be between 40-105 Degrees F. Goldfish are natives of freshwater ponds or other slow moving water bodies. More striking colors led to the birth of the fancy Goldfish variety. Inbreeding and breeding in captivity led to more mutations. The Chinese emperor exclusively maintained the first Goldfish pond, a luxury that he denied his subjects. It was at this time that genetic mutation of carps produced the golden or the yellowy orange coloration on the carp. The Goldfish pond saw its origin in the Tang Dynasty of China. Never just go and buy fancy goldfish from a shop and put them in your pond as these fish will almost certainly not be used to our prolonged winter. Research the background to your chosen fish and contact either your most local goldfish club or the Goldfish Society of Great Britain to source those that have already overwintered in an outdoor pond. Some strains of fancy goldfish are hardier than others and I’ve never seen the likes of Pearlscales or Bubble eyes kept in this way. Just because the fish may be OK outside you still can’t mix them with single tail varieties and I would recommend a one-variety pond approach. I am also aware of Orandas, Fantails and so on kept successfully under similar circumstances and, in a few cases, much further north. Growth rates were also good, despite the fact the fish were subject to normal seasonal changes. It never adversely affected the fish - in fact they spawned regularly! This was unheated, only 30cm/12” deep and regularly froze over in winter. I live in the south-east and have kept Ranchu, considered by many to be delicate, in an exposed outdoor pond for nearly ten years. Where you live in the UK may have some bearing when it comes to keeping fancy goldfish in a pond, but it will definitely extend to some the fancier varieties if you live further south and experience a shorter/warmer winter. Some fancies are more suitable for ponds than others.
